Back to School with Braces

Going back to school is always an adjustment, and adding braces to the equation can make things really difficult. At Jordan Dentistry in Cumming, GA, we want your family to be as comfortable as possible with your teeth. Here are some tips for dealing with braces at school.

  • Pack a Lunch + Snacks. With so many food restrictions, make it easier on your child by making sure they pack lunch with foods that are braces-approved, easy to eat, and tasty. Don’t forget to include snacks, especially those that will help with cravings for sweets.
  • Make a Kit. Pack all the essentials of daily braces care in an easy-to-carry bag. Make sure to include toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, wax, lip balm, and a small mirror. Take the bag to lunch for easy after-meal maintenance. The easier it is for kids to carry their cleaning supplies, the more likely they are to use them! This will help prevent embarrassing mishaps–nobody wants food stuck in their teeth. smile with braces
  • Ask for Help. Especially with new braces-wearers, speak with teachers about the situation. Chances are your child isn’t their first student with braces! Politely explain that your student may need more frequent bathroom breaks or a little extra time. And don’t forget that your dentist and orthodontist are here to help too.
  • Pack Extras. Mouth guards, lip balm, wax–make sure you have extras of anything kids are likely to lose!
  • Schedule Smart. The very beginning of the school year may not be the best time to get braces put on. And remember, new braces and adjustments can make cause some pain. Opt for a lower-stress time like school breaks, so kids have time to practice caring for their teeth and parents have time to help them deal with soreness and headaches.
