Don’t Floss Like That!

We all know flossing is good for dental health, and at Jordan Dentistry we strongly encourage it. If you’re flossing at all, you’re doing pretty well! But if you want to take your flossing game to the next level, consider these four common flossing mistakes. Are you guilty?dental floss

  1. Not Flossing Regularly. When you don’t floss regularly, bacteria can build up and make the gums more sensitive, which can cause bleeding when you do floss. This is probably most common flossing mistake, and the simplest to fix: just floss at least every other day!
  2. Being Too Rough. There’s no need to punish your poor gums! Too much aggression can lead to gum recession over the years, so take your time and be gentle but thorough. Keeping your floss a little slack and easing it between teeth will help with this.
  3. Reusing Floss. Use enough floss to make sure that every tooth gets a fresh piece, or you may wind up spreading bacteria around your mouth.
  4. Zoning Out. Flossing isn’t just a time to clean your teeth–it’s also a time to keep track of what’s going on with your mouth. Is any part of your gums tender or sensitive? Do you notice bleeding anywhere? Dental health is a team effort; the more you pay attention to these things, the better you can help your dentist know what to look for.
